Two Massachusetts Local Cultural Council Grants Out This Week: MCSM Women's Center & Abby's House Women's Shelter in Worcester, MA
On Thursday, October 15, I and Abby's House made the deadline for two Local Cultural Council grants in Massachusetts for me to speak about childhood incest/abuse/domestic violence and to read from my book. For both events I will introduce the event with information for supporters specific to survivors and insights and inspiration for survivors themselves. I will follow with a reading of hope and victory from my book.
Montague Catholic Social Ministries, Women's Center, began as a way to fight domestic violence. It hosts many, many healing and empowering programs for women.
Abby's House was one of the first women's shelters in this country and is now a strong entity in the community of Worcester, providing shelter, housing, and advocacy for women.
I recently exhibited several of my healing art pieces, introduced my Blooming work, and read the poem "I'll Keep Going" (see the video to right) at the "Transcendent Art Show: visions of mental illness and mental health." Afterwards, a representative from Abby's House came up to me to tell me how much she appreciated my work. I told her I would LOVE to do a presentation there!
This was my first time applying for these grants, and, even though I only did two of them, I am so glad I have now dispelled my fear of the unknown for next year. In the process I have also gathered another women's shelter and a domestic violence venue to apply to for 2017. I'm sure more will come.
I received a lot of help from Christine Diani at the Montague Catholic Social Ministries Women's Center. She guided me and a few others through the process, fielded lots of further questions from me, and gave me her support during all of it!
Abby's House went on to submit the grant for the city of Worcester as residency is required there.
I am so pleased at having accomplished this and hope! hope! these will both be accepted!
As I write, I discover more and more who I am, and, as I do so, I share with you, in case anything I write may resonate with, help, or guide you.
